6 Steps for a thorough hot tub Spring Clean
The evenings are getting lighter, the first crocuses are adding a speck of colour to our parks and gardens and spring is on its way, making this the perfect time to clean your hot tub. Follow our easy steps and you will have a sparkling clean hot tub ready for some fun in the sun.
1. DRAIN HOT TUB WATER
Always drain your hot tub water and refill according to the instructions outlined in your Owner’s Manual to get rid of detergent residue from bathing suits and soap film which may have accumulated. For best results we recommend that you add a flush out agent to your old tub water before draining it down. This will allow you to deep clean the internal plumbing and those pipes that cannot be reached with a cleaning cloth. We recommend “Hot tubs and Living – Spa and Hot tub Flush Out Agent” or “Swirl Away” for an easy and effective deep clean.
2.CLEAN YOUR HOT TUB FILTER
As part of your regular maintenance, you should be removing filters from the hot tub and cleaning them on a weekly basis. Depending on usage and condition of the filter it may suffice to rinse the filter under clean tap water. Alternatively, spray the filter with Spa Instant Filter Cleaner, rinse thoroughly and put it back into your hot tub.
For best practice keep two sets of filter so you can replace filters in the hot tub with the previous week’s dried filters and keep alternating every week.
On a monthly basis, remove filters and soak overnight with a filter cleaning tablet, then rinse and leave to dry. This will help release any oils or other contaminants that have built up in your filter.
Spring time might also be a good time to buy a brand new filter. You should replace your filter at least once a year to ensure the best possible water quality and if you are going through all the trouble of giving your hot tub a spring clean then we would highly recommend that you do not put a dirty filter into your clean hot tub but start the season with a brand new filter.
3. CHECK ALL YOUR EQUIPMENT
It is a good idea to periodically check all your equipment to ensure it is in working order. If you winterised your hot tub you will want to hook everything back up and get things going again. Make sure your pump and jets turn on and off properly. Turn your heater to the desired temperature and make sure your hot tub heater is working as it should.
4. ACCESSORIES
Spring is a great time to spruce things up around your hot tub, or simply make additions to make things easier. Tired of lifting the large cover on and off your hot tub? 5. COVER
Examine your cover for any rips or wear and tear from the winter, and check to see if it has become waterlogged. If everything appears to be as it should, give your cover a good clean. It is important to use a vinyl protector to extend its life and appearance. Our Softub shampoo and conditioner set is the perfect kit for the job – even if you do not have a Softub hot tub.
The vinyl cleaner should be used only on the top of the cover; you don’t want any of the cleaner’s chemicals to get into your hot tub and possibly affect the water’s chemistry. To clean the underside of the cover, use a garden hose. To dry the hot tub cover, just let it air-dry (needless to say this should be done on a warm or sunny day).
6. CLEAN YOUR SHELL OR LINER
Just like anything else that sits outdoors, the shell or interior liner can get dirty. Wiping the hot tub down with a damp cloth periodically will keep your spa looking fresh. Do not be tempted to use normal household cleaners to tackle any stains on your hot tub as they may damage the product as well as the water chemistry in your spa. Use “Spa Film Cleanse” for stubborn stains or marks on the interior of the hot tub and protect your exterior with 3o3 spray to keep your hot tub looking as nice as the day you bought it.
7. BALANCE YOUR WATER
Once your hot tub has been cleaned, fill it with fresh water.
The key to a clean, healthy, happy spa environment is proper water chemistry. To ensure clean, clear water, there are some basic water care chemicals, such as chlorine or bromine as well as ph adjusters which you will need to add to the water to kill bacteria and germs and keep the ph of the water in balanced.
When the water care basics are followed, hot tub water chemistry can be maintained in just a few minutes a week. The right configuration will be based on the size, make and model of your hot tub as well as how often you use it.
